In recent months, Shehbaz Sharif, the younger brother of three-time former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has been seen leading the charge against Imran Khan.
In 1990, he was elected to the National Assembly. Later during their second tenure, Shehbaz and Nawaz, had to spend several years in exile in Saudi Arabia following the military coup of 1999.
He came back to Pakistan in 2007 to challenge the mighty dictator Ex-General Musharaf. He secured Punjab in the 2009 elections and in the 2013 elections his party also formed a government at the center. He was nominated for the position of PML-N president in 2017, when his brother was found guilty on charges of concealing assets related to the Panama Papers and thus disqualified from holding office.
He was thrice the Chief Minister of Punjab (1997-99), (2008–2013) and (2013–2018).
Under his administration, Punjab made progress by leaps and bounds. He is an excellent administrator. His services to counter dengue and increase the share of renewable energy in the province are acknowledged by even its worst enemies.
He has given some of the landmark projects like the QA Solar, Danish School, Youth Program, Metro bus and Orange line, which despite severe criticism were copied by his opposition in their respective provinces.
His efforts to promote education and access to health facilities are commendable.
Thus it is expected of him to show the same skill and administration he has shown in his previous tenures at a provincial level. Following the last government blunders, it will be a tough challenge but not impossible.
